Product Description

Scientific Characters chronicles the contests over character, knowledge, trust, and truth in a politically charged scientific controversy that erupted after a 1994 Chicago Tribune headline: “Fraud in Breast Cancer Research: Doctor Lied on Data for Decade.” In the aftermath of this dramatic news, Dr. Bernard Fisher, the eminent oncologist and celebrated pioneer of breast cancer research, came under intense scrutiny following allegations that one of his investigators falsified data in landmark breast cancer research. Although he was eventually cleared of all wrongdoing, the controversy called into question the treatment decisions of tens of thousands of women, because Fisher’s research had demonstrated that lumpectomy and radiation were as effective as breast removal for early stage cancers—a finding that was hailed as revolutionary in women’s health care.

Moving back and forth between news coverage, medical journals, letters to the editor, and oncology pamphlets, Lisa Keränen draws insights from rhetoric, literary studies, sociology, and science studies to analyze the roles of character in shaping the outcomes of the “Datagate” controversy. Throughout the scandal, debates about the character of Fisher and other key players endured, showing how scientific knowledge is shaped by perceptions of the personal temperament, trustworthiness, integrity, and transparency of those who produce it. As administrators, politicians, scientists, patients, journalists, and citizens attempted to make sense of what had happened, and to assess the integrity of the research, they raised questions, assigned blame, attributed responsibility, and reshaped the norms of scientific practice. Scientific Characters thusaddresses what happens when scientists, patients, and advocates are called to defend themselves in public concerning complex technical matters with direct implications for human life. In assessing the rhetoric that animated Datagate, Scientific Characters sheds light on the challenges faced by scientists and citizens as science becomes more bureaucratized, dispersed, and accountable to varied publics.

Free Enterprise

Expanding Socialism is the problem. Free Enterprise Is the Solution.

As your Congressman, I will do everything within my power to defend and promote our free enterprise economic system and fight those who seek to subject America to socialism.

America is the greatest nation in the history of the world. We enjoy a standard of living envied by the world. We are blessed with a military that is unmatched in human history. We are a beacon of freedom for all.

Is America great because we are lucky? No!

America is great because we enjoy a free enterprise economy that, over time, has made us the world’s greatest economic power and generated so much wealth that even the poorest American lives better than most people around the world. Free enterprise forces companies to deliver goods and services better, faster, or cheaper than their competition (if they are to survive). All Americans benefit from this competition because the promise of monetary reward for a job well done motivates people to work hard, be creative, and earn more money for themselves and their families.

But the free enterprise system that has given us so much is under attack. The Socialist wing of the Democrat Party controls Washington and does not or will not see Socialism for what it is. ]]>
Socialism is forcing tax increases to unsustainable levels, thereby taking money from families and the private sector to expand government intervention in our economy.

Socialism is bailing out banks, insurance companies, and other politically powerful industries with taxpayer money, thereby rewarding failure rather than success, while never correcting the cause of the problems.

Socialism is destroying the best health care system the world has ever known by replacing it with a risky government program that will interfere with our ability to make decisions about our own treatments.

Socialism is an American president firing General Motor’s president, appointing his successor, and then taking over the company.

In an April 9, 2009 Rasmussen Poll, 30% of self-professed Democrats stated they prefer Socialism over free enterprise and 31% had no preference between the two. That’s scary.

The threat of Socialism to America cannot be overstated. No Socialist economy in history has ever sustained both adequate domestic programs and a national defense. Socialist economies have consistently produced lower incomes and higher unemployment than enjoyed in America.

Socialism is already undermining our national defense capabilities by diverting money from national defense (such as missile defense) to welfare and other wealth transfer programs. While the threatened demise of our military by Socialists is economically bad for the Tennessee Valley, it is deadly for America.

As your Congressman, I will do my utmost to defend and promote America’s free enterprise system. I will work to protect our economic freedom and reverse the giant strides made by politicians who seek to take it away.

America is a nation of individuals and freedom. If we will simply have trust in the free enterprise system, America will be fine. But if we fall for the false promises of Socialists who proclaim we can only trust government (not our families or ourselves), then America risks everything our ancestors have sacrificed to build.

“People that are addicted to gambling are much like people addicted to drugs. You dont know what they are willing to do to get their hands on a little bit of cash,” says one West Alabama woman who’s family has been affected by gambling addiction, “It’s just a way to relieve stress and pain, and things that are going on in your life, so maybe there’s some deeper things going on.” That’s a problem that many people face in America, and right here in west Alabama. The West Alabama woman WVUA spoke with told us some of the signs to look out for. “They’ll be gone for long periods of time, and not knowing exactly where they were and sort of vague stories about where they were. And of course the money situation,” while she talked about the stuggle,”It’s put a lot of stress on everyone. And makes it very difficult to know when to trust and when to not trust.” And because of the lack of trust, a feeling of helplessness washed over the entire family. “It a feeling of desperateness, because you want help so much but it’s like you can’t stop them. And no matter what you say or what you do, they’re going to find a way to go,” as the West Alabama woman told us how she looked out for other families, “It’s just painful to watch a family member suffer and really they are suffering. And it makes everybody in the family suffer because you’re watching it and you’re having to deal with the fall out problems that come because of gambling.” The West Alabama woman also says the suffering reaches
